About me
My name is Melanie Golding and I am finishing up my 19th year of teaching! I spent 9 years in the US teaching elementary students in the mid 2000's and was one of the first teachers in my district to get a Smartboard and laptops for all my students. I spent about half my years in North Carolina developing interactive lessons that included student blogging, district lessons for literacy and math and integrating technology in many ways. I returned to Canada in 2013 and continued teaching elementary, learning and leading coding and robotics in my classroom. In 2020, the pandemic created a new position for me as a teacher of remote learning and this pushed me into the junior high world. That year we built a program from nothing and dealt with fluctuating numbers, engagement issues and families who were very nervous of this new global situation. That year led to another year of teaching a junior high program where we only continued to grow. This in turn led to the creation of a junior high online program for students in the Peace Region around Grande Prairie. This past year, I was placed into the High School Online Program and tasked with creating a grade ten program that not only taught synchronously but also our core subjects would be taught in quarters. The adventure and growth that I experienced in the last four years and especially the last year has been tremendous. Navigating high school credits while delivering synchronous online core courses while balancing students who may have complex needs has proven to be a challenge but also rewarding as I strive to build online classroom community in the lessons and in google meets each day.
